Background
Professor Pang joined the department in July 2002 after spending 8 years at the New Zealand Forest Research Institute as a scientist for the first 3 years and senior scientist afterwards. At the institute, he undertook research on drying of wood and wood based materials.

He received his bachelor and masters degrees in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering from Hebei University of Technology (now Hebei University of Technology), Tianjin, China, where he spent 9 years teaching Process Equipment Design and Mechanical Analysis. During that period of time, he was involved in research on new technology development for evaporation and drying of chemical materials. In 1991 he came to the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Canterbury, as a research assistant. He studied for his PhD from 1992 to 1994 on a research project of high temperature drying of softwood timber boards in a batch kiln.

He is currently a member of:

  • International Drying Symposium (IDS) Advisory Board;
  • International Editorial Committee of maderas: CIENCA Y TECNOLOGIA;
  • International Editorial Board, International Journal of Bioenergy and Biorefinery;
  • New Zealand Representative in Task 33: Biomass Thermal Gasification, International Energy Agent (IEA);
  • Board member of Bioenergy Association New Zealand.

Professor Pang has recently been elected to:

  • Fellow, Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ) (Elected in 2011).
  • Fellow, International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS) (Elected in 2011).

Professor Pang is also an honorary Professor of Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Hebei University of Technology, and adjunct Professor, Hebei University of Science and Technology. He received a Science Achievement Award of New Zealand Forest Research Institute in 1997. Professor Pang is currently the leader of a research programmes of ‘Biomass for Hydrogen-Rich Syngas and Liquid Fuel' which is funded by New Zealand Ministry of Science and Innovation (MSI). He has collaborative links with national and international institutions, including CRL Energy Ltd., New Zealand Forest Research Institute Ltd., Plant and Food Research, John Fogarty Kiln Ltd., Windsor Engineering Group Ltd., New Zealand, the University of Sydney Australia, Vienna University of Technology, Austria, Hebei University of Technology Tianjin, Institute of Chemical Industry of Forestry Products, Nanjing Forestry University, Beijing Forestry University, South-West Forestry University and Hebei University of Science and Technology, China, and University of Bio-Bio, Chile.

Professor Pang is the Director for Wood Technology Research Centre at the University.
