Christchurch Smogbusters Workshop 2000 - ENCH 363 Project
Theme
Elimination of Smog in Christchurch - Christchurch by nature of its geographic location and climate is subject to times of severe smog pollution in the winter months.
Aim
To find solutions to Christchurch’s winter smog pollution - Different topics will be researched and explored to achieve this aim. The various topics will be researched by groups of three. The topics are outlined in a master plan in the form of a "mindmap".

- workshop presentation,
- workshop proceedings
Each group is assigned a topic centred around the main theme. A study is to be done to review the literature, the local situation, status of conventional technology, new emerging technologies, recent innovations; recommend practical sustainable solutions, form links with other topics. Each group will produce a research paper, a workshop presentation and a poster.
The Research Paper
The final report is to be in the form of a publishable paper no longer than 20 A4 pages. This will be combined with all other papers into a bound Proceedings to coincide with the final Workshop.
This should include
- Abstract
- Background review of the topic in relation to the theme
- State of the art for relevant proven technologies
- Extent of resources with reference to existing technological infrastructure, regulatory policies, and city planning
- Options on how the technology/policies could be expanded, substituted for, or improved to contribute to lowering pollution
- Economics and social benefits of implementation
- Evaluating the best solutions based on established resources/proven technology, impact on greenhouse gases.
- Green dream! Innovative solutions, economics, evaluation of improvements to air quality
- Connections with other topics
- Recommended practical sustainable solutions including at least one original conceptual solution.
- Bibliography
Papers must comply with the standard format and sample provided.
The Workshop
For the final session a Workshop will be held at which each group will present the results of their study in a 12-minute presentation. There will be a total of 12 papers over a period of 2 ½ hours. The audience will be class members only with compulsory attendance. There will be no time for questions and an elected person will chair the Workshop.
Poster Session
Immediately following the Workshop a poster session will be held. Each group will summarise their papers in the form of a poster, size A1, and these will be displayed for viewing. Each member of the group will take turns to attend to their poster to explain and answer questions during the session. The session will run for 1 ½ hours and be attended by the whole class and invited guests including academic staff. The session will be a relaxed and informal affair to provide a forum for questions and discussion. Refreshments will be provided.
The Proceedings
All papers will be combined together under a common cover as a Proceedings of the Christchurch Smogbusters Workshop 2000 This will be for display but if there is a future demand for it, copies will be sold through a Smogbusters website. Income will be managed by class reps of 2Pro2000 and will go towards covering expenses and awards for best paper and best poster.
